The Mayflower Bride: Daughters of the Mayflower (book 1) by Kimberley Woodhouse

Book Description:  Mary Elizabeth Chapman boards the Speedwell in 1620 as a Separatist seeking a better life in the New World. William Lytton embarks on the Mayflower as a carpenter looking for opportunities to succeed—and he may have found one when a man from the Virginia Company offers William a hefty sum to keep a stealth eye on company interests in the new colony. The season is far too late for good sailing and storms rage, but reaching land is no better as food is scarce and the people are weak. Will Mary Elizabeth survive to face the spring planting and unknown natives? Will William be branded a traitor and expelled?

My Thoughts:  This is a brand new series for those who love history, family, faith and adventure.
Not having read anything by Kimberley Woodhouse I was excited to see that she writes an exciting and adventurous story with so much history!
Life on on the Speedwell in 1620 wasn't for wimps.  Especially for a Separatist seeking religious freedom.
Mary Elizabeth Chapmn is on her way to the New World.
Aslo on the ship is William Lytton a young carpenter who has been employed as a sort of spy.
When Mary Elizabeth and William meet on the ship they become friends.
But as the days stretch out it seems that there will not be enough food. Land can't be far, can it?
Poor Mary Elizabeth will she make it?
A well written, almost historical account, of those who sacrificed to have a better life in the New World.

All's Fair in LOVE and Cupcakes by Betsy St. Amant

Book Description:  Kat inspected rows of the same old cupcakes. They seemed to blink back at her, as if they knew she was capable of so much more.
Kat Varland has had enough of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
At twenty-six years old, Kat is still living in the shadows of her family in Bayou Bend, Louisiana. Still working shifts at her Aunt Maggie’s bakery. Still wondering what to do with her passion for baking and her business degree. And still single.
But when Lucas Brannen, Kat’s best friend, signs her up for a reality TV bake-off on Cupcake Combat, everything Kat ever wanted is suddenly dangled in front of her: creative license as a baker, recognition as a visionary . . . and a job at a famous bakery in New York.
As the competition heats up, Lucas realizes he might have made a huge mistake. As much as he wants the best for Kat, the only thing he wants for himself—her—is suddenly in danger of slipping away.
The bright lights of reality cooking wars and the chance at a successful career dazzle Kat’s senses and Lucas is faced with a difficult choice: help his friend achieve her dreams . . . or sabotage her chances to keep her in Louisiana.

My Thoughts:  Betsy St. Amant pens a "sweet read" in All's Fair in LOVE and Cupcakes!
I admit that I chose this book based on the title and the picture (shameful, I know!)  But I love cupcakes and was caught up in the reality cupcake bake off.
I like Kat she is slowly coming into her "own."  And then there's Lucas...oh! Lucas!
Lucas sees Kat's potential and he signs her up for a reality bake off show.  Kat is not sure about going on national TV for a bake off.  But she wants something more in her life than plain chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.  {This seems to be the catalyst of the story.}
The relationship between Kat and Lucas was, at times, a little like plain vanilla . . . they're friends but not sure if they should love each other.  The romance part of this story was clean and best described as young love.  Kat and Lucas like each other and are the best of friends BUT they are in love and can't seem to get the love part out.
The best part of this story are the cupcakes and bakeoff.
A fun, light read!

Hearts Entwined by Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connelly, Regina Jennings, Melissa Jagears

Book Description:  Four top historical romance novelists team up in this new collection to offer stories of love and romance with a twist of humor. In Karen Witemeyer's "The Love Knot," Claire Nevin gets the surprise of her life awaiting her sister's arrival by train. Mary Connealy's "The Tangled Ties That Bind" offers the story of two former best friends who are reunited while escaping a stampede. Regina Jennings offers "Bound and Determined," where a most unusual trip across barren Oklahoma plains is filled with adventure, romance, and . . . camels? And Melissa Jagears' "Tied and True" entertains with a tale of two hearts from different social classes who become entwined at a cotton thread factory.

My Thoughts: I love a book that has more than one story in it.  This book has four novellas from four great authors.
The Love Knot by Karen Witmeyer is a fun story about Claire and an unexpected package that her siblings send her.  With twists and turns this short love story makes the reader grin and glow with love.
The next story by Mary Connealy, The Tangled Ties that Bind, is a western about two friends who reunite their friendship while trying to stay alive and escape a raging stampede.
Then Regina Jennings writes Bound and Determined.  Oh, this is such a humorous story and the title is just a pun of what the trip across Oklahoma plains is all about romance and camels...yes, camels in Oklahoma!
The last story Tied and True by Melissa Jagears is about a cotton factory where two hearts become entwined in love.
I love the "punny" titles that go with these fantabulous novellas!
A great Valentine's gift for the reader in your life.

The Celebration (Amish Cooking Class, Book 3)

Book Description:  Lyle and Heidi Troyer have taken in a brother and sister, who were orphaned when their parents were killed in a car accident. Hoping to help the children adapt and make friends, Heidi decides to hold a series of cooking classes for kids. But kids are always accompanied by an adult—and that is where the trouble arises.
Miranda Cooper is living the life of a single mom to her two kids while separated from her husband, but Trent is trying to worm his way back into her heart.
Denise McGuire’s life as a wife, mom, and real estate broker is full and spilling over.
Darren Keller, single dad and firefighter, and Ellen Blackburn, single mom and nurse, find a few things in common.

My Thoughts:  I've enjoyed reading the Amish Cooking Class series.  It all began when Heidi Toyer came up with the idea to have cooking classes.
And before she knew it, not only were her classes full of adults willing and wanting to learn, but she
When she and her husband take in an orphaned brother and sister she realizes that the children need to be with other children.  So she opens up a children's cooking class.  But like most of our well laid plans, Heidi doesn't plan on the parents begin there with the children at every cooking class...this is where the trouble begins.  Funny how children are  much better behaved when mom or dad leave them to learn.
So it seems that there is some drama going on with some of the parents.  Miranda Cooper is a single mom with two kids, Denise McQuire is an overworked mom and Darren Keller firefighting single dad.  And Ellen Blackburn is a single mom who is a nurse.
With all the different backgrounds and issues how can Heidi and the cooking class make a difference?
A great read!  With humorous human moments.

Unglued Devotional, 60 Days of Imperfect Progress by Lysa Terkeurst

Book Description:  This companion devotional to the bestselling book Unglued provides encouragement to help readers handle emotional struggles. Including a daily opening Scripture, Thought for the Day, devotion, and closing prayer, this book helps readers begin a 60-day journey in learning to positively process raw emotions, such as fear, anger, and regret.

My Thoughts:  When I saw this devotional, Unglued, 60 Days of Imperfect Progress, by Lysa Terkeurst, I knew this devotional was written just for me!
As a mother, a pastor's wife and a teacher I feel that I am coming Unglued at times.  You know, those little things that don't mean much to anyone else but can make you, well, come unglued!??!
I also was impressed by the subtitle, 60 Days of Imperfect Progress.  Yeah, um, that's me!  Imperfect by trying.
As I was reading this devotional and came to Day 32, p. 101, Procedure Manual Step 5, Your Reactions Determine Your Reach,  the scripture from 2 Chronicles 20:29-30, is given at the top of the chapter. And then the Thought For the Day:  "My  reactions testify to the kind of relationship I have with Jesus and the kind of effect He has on my heart."  Oh!My! Just what I needed for the day!
I then prayed the prayer at the end of the chapter:  "Dear Lord, in times when my happy gets bumped, help me to add to the authenticity of my love for you, not negate it.  In Jesus' name. Amen."
This is a great devotional for those of us traveling the road of life.  And, yes, we are imperfect and will have days we come unglued but He is there for us!
If you're feeling unglued then grab this devotional today!  And join us as we seek His way!

High Treason (FBI Task Force) by DiAnn Mills

Book Description:  When Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal visits Houston to seek cancer treatment for his mother, an attempt on his life puts all agencies on high alert. FBI Special Agent Kord Davidson is the lead on the prince’s protective detail because of their long-standing friendship, but he’s surprised―and none too happy―when the CIA brings one of their operatives, Monica Alden, in on the task force after the assassination attempt.
Kord and Monica must quickly put aside interagency squabbles, however, when they learn the prince has additional motives for his visit―plans to promote stronger ties with the US and encourage economic growth and westernization in his own country. Plans that could easily incite a number of suspects both in the US and in countries hostile to Saudi Arabia. Worse yet, the would-be assassin always seems to be one step ahead of them, implicating someone close to the prince―or the investigation. But who would be willing to commit high treason, and can Kord and Monica stop them in time?

My Thoughts:  AHhh, yes!  This is the third book in the FBI Task Force by DiAnn Mills.  These are  stand alone reads.  About different situations, different people but they all take place in Texas.
Saudi Prince Omar bin Talal is in Houston, Texas seeking cancer treatments for his dear mother.  But it seems that someone or a group of someones is seeking to take Prince Omar out of the picture.
It's a;; very confusing to him.  Trying to take care of this mother and then there are threats on his own life.  Enter Lord Davidson, friend of Omar and the lead agent on the task force but as trouble escalates Monica Alden is sent in to help.  Upsetting Kord's apple basket.  Lord doesn't need a woman helping him oaths task.
Monica is not one to bend so she and Kord have quite of few arguments before they realize that they need to band to together and keep Omar and his mother safe.
As Kord and Monica work together romance is on the horizon.
This is a fast paced read.  A hard to determine who is the bad guy.  Lots of action.
I loved this read!  Even though there is romance, the romance is not the main theme it is low key.  Taking care of Omar and his mother is the main theme....with lots of action in guarding them and finding out the why of it all.

Secrets {Book One in the Glenbrooke Series} by Robin Jones Gunn

Book Description:  The Glenbrooke Series

Jessica ran from her past...but can she hide from love? Jessica Morgan wants desperately to forget the past and begin a new life. She chooses a small, peaceful town tucked away in Oregon’s Willamette Valley as the place to start over—Glenbrooke. Once there, Jessica conceals her identity from the intriguing personalities she meets—including the compassionate paramedic who desires to protect her and the jealous woman who wants nothing more than to destroy her. Will Jessica’s deceit ruin all hope for the future? Or will she find a deeper peace that allows her to stop hiding the truth from those who love her most of all? This heartwarming bestseller, book one in the Glenbrooke series, introduces the fascinating people of Glenbrooke in a compelling tale of romance and spiritual truth.

My Thoughts:  Robin Jones Gunn is one of my MOST favorite authors, ever!  The Glenbrooke Series may be an "oldie" but it is definitely a "goodie!"
In Secrets, the first book in the Glenbrook series we meet Jessica.  The first chapter of this book begins with a lot of action and excitement.  So true to life.
Jessica is and wants to begin a new start in life so she has chosen Glenbrooke.  However, as with any new move there are a few glitches and Jessica is hiding her true identity.  Only one person in town knows  the "real" Jessica.  Many secrets abound!  Sometimes when there are secrets it makes it hard to keep up with the truth.  Robin Jones Gunn brings out biblical truths in a great fiction read . . . there are no secrets with God.
I loved this book.  It's a light read and can be read in one setting...say on a cold, dreary winter day.
I plan to read the other books in this series.  From my understanding each book is a stand alone read and each is about a different person but since all the books take place in Glenbrooke I think it would be best to read them in order.
Cuddle up with a great book!

{Fiction Guild Blog Tour} Imperfect Justice (Hidden Justice) by Cara Putman

Book Description:  To the world it seems obvious: Kaylene Adams killed her daughter and then was shot by police. Attorney Emilie Wesley knows a different story: Kaylene would never hurt anyone and was looking for a way out of a controlling, abusive relationship. Her death shakes Emilie’s belief that she can make a difference for women in violent marriages. Self-doubt plagues her as she struggles to continue her work in the wake of the tragedy.
Reid Billings thought he knew his sister—right up until he learned how she died. He discovers a letter from Kaylene begging him to fight for custody of her daughters if anything should happen to her. No attorney in her right mind would support an uncle instead of the father in a custody case, but Kaylene’s letter claims Emilie Wesley will help him.
Thrown together in a race to save Kaylene’s surviving daughter, Emily and Reid pursue the constantly evasive truth. If they can hang on to hope together, can they save a young girl—and find a future for themselves in the process?

My Thoughts:  Imperfect Justice is the second book in the Hidden Justice collection.
I read the first book, Beyond Justice, and each of these stand alone novels are about women and the law and how women help each other.
This was quite an interesting story.
An abusive husband and a wife/mother who is believed guilty of killing her daughter.
This was an emotional read.  How can a mother kill her child?
Well, as attorney Emilie Wesley knows.  She can't or didn't.  But to prove that a dead mother is innocent is hard to prove.
Then Reid Billings the brother of the deceased woman knows a whole different story of Kaylene's life, too.
So, when Emilie is approached by Reid she knows this may be the hardest case she will or has ever prosecuted.
The story of an abusive marriage and a demented man who claims to love his family but is so abusive he can kill a child.
Reid and Emilie strive to protect the living daughter.
What a story!

Devotions for the Hungry Heart: Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson

Book Description:  "Whether you have a healthy craving for more Jesus, or the barely discernible taste for a relationship with Him that seems beyond your reach, the glorious truth is that God put that hunger in your heart in the first place, and He is more willing to fan that flame than you or I could ever be."
--From the Introduction

My Thoughts:  Each as we ring in the New Year I begin looking for a new devotional book.  I enjoy reading the Bible but sometimes having a companion book such as a good devotional book brings out things that will help me in my life.  Ad so this year I chose Devotions For The Hungry Heart.
I love the subtitle of this devotional book:  Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday.  Don't you just love that we should have Jesus in our everyday lives every day of the week.
This is a great devotional book.  Each devotion begins with the Hungry Heart . . . And the devotional are in weeks. And there are twenty weeks of devotions.
Then in the middle of the book is a short/mini section of recipes.  Refreshing recipes for the body.
I love this devotional book.
I just have one dislike and that is the color of the print.  It is a light blue/aqua color which I find rather hard to read.  It may not bother a young person but an older person may not be able to see the print.

My Heart Belongs in Niagara Falls, New York: Adele's Journey by Amanda Barratt

Book Description:  Outwardly, Adele Linley’s trip to visit her American cousins is nothing more than a summer vacation. In reality, she’s the daughter of an English aristocrat with barely a penny to her name seeking a rich American husband.

Having grown up in an overcrowded orphanage, Drew Dawson is determined to make a name for himself. He’ll take any honest job to provide for his sister—even crossing Niagara Falls by tightrope.

On a sightseeing trip to the Falls, Adele meets several eligible suitors. Incredibly wealthy and pompous, Franklin Conway takes an immediate fancy to her. But Adele would truly like to marry for love.  When she encounters the mysterious Drew in the garden, Adele is confused by her feelings for someone who is everything she is NOT looking for. Will they both stay the course they have chosen for themselves?

My Thoughts:  I'm loving these My Heart Belongs reads.  Adele's Journey is a somewhat light read but, yet, there are may heart truths in the depths as one reads about Adele and Drew.
Adele is somewhat like a spy to me...she is utterly penniless but she comes to America to visit her cousins hoping to snatch a wealthy husband.
It takes a lot of planning and escapades to try and snatch a wealthy husband.  Gotta give a lady credit for trying.  After all it wasn't easy for a lady to be single and independent if her daddy didn't have a dime but was suppose to be wealthy.
Now Dre Dawson is a character!  He plans to walk on a tightrope across Niagara Falls so he can earn money for he and his sister.  Drew remembers all to well the pain of growing up in an orphanage.
This is a great story and a fun one too.

{Fiction Blog Tour} You're Gonna Love Me by Robin Lee Hatcher

Book Description:  Samantha Winters lives her life the way a good accountant should—measured, deliberate, and safe. After watching her father die in a tragic skiing accident, she decided never to allow risk into her life again. But she didn’t count on falling for Nick Chastain, who embodies everything she doesn’t want in her safely constructed world.

Against Samantha’s warnings, Nick plans a dangerous kayaking trip over spring break. Furious that he’s so careless with his life, she ends their fledgling relationship with harsh words.
Two years later, Samantha is desperately in need of a change. When she learns her grandmother has had an accident and is in need of a caretaker, Samantha quickly packs her bags and heads to Thunder Creek, Idaho. But nothing could prepare her for the surprise awaiting her in her grandmother’s hospital room . . Nick.
My Thoughts:  The title of this story gave me pause for thought....You're gonna Love me.  Before reading the book I took the title as a command but as I read this sweet story I realized it is a statement as in you don't have to love me but you're gonna love me...once you really get to know me.
Sometimes I had a slightly difficult time with Samantha's attitude.  She seems selfish and a bit spoiled.
But as one reads one soon begins to realize that Samantha likes he life organized because she is afraid.  Some of these fears may come from easy happenings in her life or she may just be afraid of change.
But Nick he likes adventure and a challenge.  Samantha didn't count on falling in love with Nick but I don't think that Nick thought he's fall in love with Samantha either.  So, when Samantha ends their budding relationship with harsh words and takes off.
However, two years later Samantha's beloved grandmother is in an accident and Samantha goes to her bedside to be her caregiver.  And who should she see as she arrives at her grandmother's side???  Nick!
This is where the story really begins and a sweet story it is with life lessons for those who feel the need to control their and those who love them.
