Prince Noah and the School Pirates (A Prince Noah Book) by Silke Schnee (Author), Heike Sistig (Illustrator)

Book Description:  It’s time for young Prince Noah to go to school. The prince, who starred in the book The Prince Who Was Just Himself, may be a little slower than other students, but he has no less joy in learning. In his kingdom, children go to school on sailing ships. There is a ship for girls and one for boys. There is a ship for children with an eye patch, a ship for children with one leg, and a ship for children who are slower learners. No one knows why there are so many different ships, but it has always been that way.

Then a terrible storm drives the ships into the hands of pirates. The boys and girls realize that they will only escape if everyone does what he or she does best. Through their adventures, they learn that diversity makes us strong and that every person has something to teach us.

My Thoughts:   Dilke Schnee writes a story about a sweet boy and his classmates.  The interesting thing about this story is that it's geared toward Down Syndrome  and disabled kids and how they learn.
At times the story is funny, like at the beginning when the cook asks Prince Noah to crack eggs for the chocolate cake.  Three eggs are on the counter but Prince Noah cracks seven eggs.
The author writes about children who have a hard time with math facts, children who wear eye patches and how quiet they are on the ship.
There is a ship for kids with one leg, a ship for kids who are slow learners, well, there are so many ships and no one knows how come so many ships came to have so many different meanings.
And then the storm hits and all the kids realize that they can only survive by helping each other.
A sweet story of imperfect kids who are perfectly willing to love and help each other. A good lesson for us all.  Since no one is "perfect."  We all need to help each other.
