Amish Prayers complied by Beverly Lewis

Book Description:  The Amish as well as other Anabaptist groups have used the same book of prayers for centuries. Now for the first time a selection of these prayers is readily available in English. This exclusive authentic translation from the original German--with an introduction by Beverly Lewis--will give readers insights into the spiritual foundations of the Plain people. Each prayer is paired with a Scripture passage to draw readers closer to God. This hardcover illustrated gift book is perfect for old and new fans of Amish fiction alike.

My Review:  In the foreword of this book Beverly Lewis details why she complied this beautiful book.  "The German prayer book Die Ernsthafte Christenpflicht has held a dear place in the hearts of Anabaptists since the date of its earliest printing in 1708.  Immigrant Anabaptists committed many of the original prayers to memory and read them to their children morning and evening.  Alongs with the old German Bible, the written prayers were regarded as a precious possession and today they continue to be embraced by Amish and Mennonites alike."
These 139 pages of prayers are divided into twelve parts.  At the end of each prayer is a corresponding scripture.  There are also plain and simple drawings throughout the book.
The prayer on page 71 "jumped out at me" so I'd like to share it with you: "We give you praise and thanksgiving holy Father for you have created everything heaven and earth, the sea and everything that is upon and within it.  You are forever faithful; you give justice to those suffering injustice.  You have saved all who have believed and trusted in you since the dawn of time, all who for you.  We ask you to give us a steadfast, living faith, a firm trust, a holy hope and a perfect love so that we may serve you wholeheartedly, with all our life and strength until the very end. Amen."
The corresponding scripture is: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee:  because He trusteth in thee."  Isaiah 26:3
This makes for a great companion as a devotional.  It would also make a great get well card for that ailing friend!
