Love Inspired Princess In Peril {Reclaiming the Crown} by Rachelle McCalla

Book Description:  A KINGDOM DIVIDED When insurgents attack the king’s motorcade, scattering the royal family, bodyguard Levi Granaldo has one goal—to protect the princess. Even though he knows Princess Isabelle distrusts him. On the run together, they fl ee to New York, to the shelter of a sanctuary established by Levi’s father. But their safety can’t last. After a surprise attack divides the pair, Isabelle is forced to face some hard truths. The danger she’s in is getting deadlier by the day…and she’ll never be able to face it without Levi by her side. Reclaiming the Crown: Born to rule with faith, honor…and love.

My Review:  Sometimes a small book packs the most punch!  Such is the case with Princess In Peril by Rachelle McCalla.  This book begins with a motorcade of the royal family being blown to bits by insurgents but focuses on just one car-Princess Isabella's.  Unbeknowst, to Isabella her father had an "inkling" that something might be amiss so he made plans to change Isabella's body guard.  Levi is now Isabella's bodyguard.  He takes his job very seriously and he is good at it.
The mystery and challenge of trying to find out why the insurgents want the royal family dead is intriguing.  And trying to find the "who" is behind this terrible action is a mystery that Isabella and Levi must track down.
This was a most believable read and truly enjoyable.
This read is filled with action, suspense, action, romance, action and faith.  This is probably my all time favorite Love Inspired book.  I can't wait for the second book in reclaiming the crown series!

Happy Book Birthday to Lisa Carter!

A Plain Disappearance, Appleseed Creek Mystery Series #3 By: Amanda Flower

Book Description:  It's Christmastime in Amish Country, and Chloe Humphrey has begun settling into her life in Appleseed Creek excited to see where her new relationship with Timothy Troyer will lead. Unfortunately it leads to murder when the couple discovers the body of Amish teenager Katie Lambright while on their first date.
Near the scene there is evidence that Timothy's friend and auto mechanic Billy Thorpe is involved with the crime. The police reveal Billy is not really who he said he was and has been living the last decade in Knox County under a stolen alias. Now, Chloe and Timothy must find Billy, bring him to justice, or prove his innocence.

My Thoughts:  The Christmas reads are beginning to make a bookshelf appearance!  Oh! Yes!  I don't have time during the Christmas season to read so reading all about it before the season is fine with me!
A Plain Disappearance is the third book in the Appleseed Creek Mystery Series.
I've read the first two books and throughly enjoyed them so I was anxiously awaiting the third!
Chloe is SO funny and entertaining.  I love the characters that Amanda has created for they are so true to life and feel like the neighbors next door.
Now, Timothy and Chloe are in a relationship.  And on their very first "real" date Timothy's sweet dog, Mabel, finds a body (dead in the cold snow) in the corner of an old barn.  Not the best of first dates!  But it only grows more intense from here . . . because all the evidence points to Timothy's friend, Billy, who also happens to be the local mechanic.
The plot grows thicker when the police find out that Billy is actually an assumed alias.
There is a side line of Chloe's forgiveness of her father and trying to forge a new relationship with him and her step-mother.
Many things aren't as they seem...or people as they present themselves.
I loved this read!  Such a great mystery! Truly a hard mystery to figure out!
The romance is fun and filled with all things Christmasy!

The first two books in the Appleseed Creek Mystery Series:

Reclaiming the Rancher's Heart: An Uplifting Inspirational Romance (Love Inspired) by Lisa Carter

Book Description:  It’s been three years since the loss of their daughter tore Jack and Kate Dolan’s world—and marriage—apart. But now Kate’s back on the ranch with shocking news: their divorce never went through. As Jack and Kate struggle to decide how to move forward, they realize they can’t rewrite the past. But that doesn’t mean the book on their love is closed. Perhaps it’s time for a new chapter…

My Thoughts: One of my favorite authors has a new book releasing on December 27th.
This is an easy and love all the characters type of read.
There are sweet, heart warming moments like when Kate returns to the ranch to inform her husband that there divorce never went through.
Kate seems to think that Jack doesn't want her and Jack seems to think that Kate can't handle life.
The reunion of hearts shows both people that neither are correct.
Love always wins!
A grand read for after the holidays when you need some rest and relaxation time.
You won't be disappointed in this timely story.

Something New (Plain City) by Dianne Christner

Book Description:  Lil Landis envisions a life outside her Conservative Mennonite home. But as she chases after her dream, problems seem to hinder her every move. Fletch Stauffer has goals of his own…that don’t include falling for spunky Lil. Will the pursuit of their ambitions force them to sacrifice what matters most?

My Review Having read Something Old by Dianne Christner I was anxious to read the next book in the Plain City Series.
I love the way the story flows but there are times where it tends to stall, fortunately these times are few and far between.
Lil Landis is a somewhat frustrate Conservative Mennonite because she craves excitement and she wants to go to culinary school.  Not things on a "good" conservative Mennonite's list of to do things.
Lil gets her chance and is on her way to becoming a chef when she must return home to take care of her clinically depressed mother.  While at home she meets Fletch a veterinary student who isn't old order Mennonite.  They both have plans and ambitions but can two worlds join or will the things that are ingrained in them tear them apart?
I enjoyed reading about the old order Mennonites and about the lives of Lil and Fletch.  Lil is always cooking...there are great tips included throughout the book.
Even though this is a romance it brings a faith filled look at being true to God and following your heart.

Book Description:  Every day for an entire year, you will be inspired by scriptures, devotional readings, and prayers that that no matter what challenges or difficult times come, God is firmly in control and His ways are good. Daily scripture readings follow a Read through the Bible in a Year plan that you may choose to complete alongside the devotional.

My Thoughts:  Every year I look for a new and inspiring devotional.  This year I found this one... Daily Wisdom for Women.
It's a lovely,  hardback,  just right size for a devotional.
There is a devotional for every day of the year. Every devotional has a scripture at the top of the page and then at the bottom of the page there is a short prayer to go with the devotional.
After perusing the book I found that the devotionals are well thought out and quite scripture based.  A win-win for me.
Plus it's a pretty book.  Also, the right size for putting in a bag or on a desktop.
This little devotional makes a wonderful gift.

Guiding Star by Katie Ganshert

Curiosity gets the best of Englisher Chase Wellington when he investigates the twenty-five-year-old disappearance of an Amish baby. When he finds adventurous Elle McAllister in Iowa will his discoveries upend her world?

Mourning Star by Amanda Flower

Eden Hochstetler slips from her parents’ fudge shop to investigate the death of her friend Isaac Yoder.  Who is guilty? Isaac’s handsome great nephew Jacob, an angry Englisher, or someone else?

In the Stars by Cindy Woodsmall

Star of Grace by Mindy Starns Clark and Emily Clark
Andy Danner left North Star to work in construction in a new Amish settlement in Louisiana. His little brother devises a scheme to bring Andy home for Christmas, and unwittingly unleashes the power of forgiveness in an old widower’s life.

My Thoughts:  Amish Christmas at North Star features some of my favorite authors.  It was a happy day when this book came in the mail!
North Star, Pennsylvania is a busy place with four babies being born.  These are the stories of Rebekah's Babies:
Guiding Star was the first story I had read by Katie Ganshert.  This short story is actually a mini mystery.  An Amish baby went missing twenty-five years ago and Englisher Chase Wellington decides to cure his curiosity and find out where this baby has "gone to".  An interesting little mystery.
The second mini mystery is by one of my favorite Amish mystery authors, Amanda Flower.  In Mourning Star, Eden decides she will investigate the death of her friend Issac.  I loved this mystery!
Cindy Woodsmall writes about Kore and Savilla In the Stars.  This was a nice short romance.
Lastly, Mindy Starns Clark and Emily Clark penn a sweet story about love and forgiveness in Star of Grace.
Amish Christmas Star at North Star is a wonderful Christmas read for Amish fans!  A not.to.be.missed read!

In doing so, they have utilized the beautifully structured pages of Inspired Design to reveal the classic truth that any home is made more beautiful when it is filled with love, joy and the determination to make those who enter it feel welcomed.

10 Tips for Setting a Beautiful Holiday Table

By Roxanne Hughes Packham,
Co-Author of the Hospitality Book: Inspired Design

In today’s rough economic climate, keep in mind that although I hope to inspire you to set a beautiful Thanksgiving or Christmas table the real beauty comes from the thought and love you show your friends and family. Beautiful tables comprise equal parts from the “Inspired” & the “Design” categories. See examples:http://www.inspireddesignpublications.blogspot.com/.

Inspired

~Place cards
I love to use the ceramic place cards that can be written on with a wipe-off marker. You can quickly write people’s names, a favorite quote or sentiment. Friends love that you thought about them before the dinner and even something as simple as writing their names on the place cards really makes them feel remembered.

~Welcome Sign
It is so welcoming, to have a sign somewhere near the front door to greet your family and friends. From a very personal “Welcome Smith Family” or a seasonal “Merry Christmas” to “We are so glad you are here” on a casual chalkboard or an elegant mirror or glass framed, and write with a wipe-off marker, that welcome sets the tone for the rest of the event.  I used an antique French cupboard door and painted it with chalkboard paint on the raised panel part.

~Quote or Scripture
The most inspirational part of the Holiday table is the beautiful quotes and scriptures. It depends on the occasion, but a quote that is either inspiring or focused on gratitude is the favorite. There is nothing like feasting your eyes, and then your thoughts, on what we can be thankful for, especially as an example for our children. Scattering them around the home (powder room, end tables, above door jam’s) is a great way to elevate your family and friends thoughts.

Design
~Fresh Greenery
Sometimes we mistakenly think a tabletop has to have flowers as a centerpiece to be really elegant and festive. Greenery is a wonderful, fresh and festive way to make a beautiful Christmas table. Simply cut a few small twigs of trees/bushes like pine or ivy, or my favorite boxwood branches, bay tree and magnolia leaves and put them in three smaller glass or crystal vases.

~Candles
No table is complete, in my opinion, with 5 to 7 little glass votives with white candles in them. The light sparkles and makes everything else on the table more beautiful and sets a soft, relaxing, often more romantic tone.

~Seasonal Piece
By seasonal I suggest a “Santa” figurine or such, a gingerbread house, or a standing cross to have in the center of the table. A clear jar of candy canes, M&M’s or such would do just fine, as well. Think: Something available only at this time of year. I usually have plenty of items in the Holiday Decor that I switch out to put on the table for each dinner.

~Napkin Rings
These can be such a pretty way to pull a linen napkin through to set on a place and make a really beautiful table setting. You can use french ribbons, or plain silver rings and they help to really make a bigger impact for an inspiring table.

~Sparkling Glasses
Whether crystal or glass, tall freshly washed glass sparkle so much with the votive candles that it is hard to wrong with this combo. A tall glass and short glass of whatever kind you like is very dramatic and beautiful, set together. Whether colored or clear the sparkle is crucial for the holiday table.

~White Plates
Although I love to use seasonal chargers and salad plates a crisp white plate is the most beautiful element to my favorite tables. They can be dressed up or down, and makes each setting look fresh and not heavy and overdone.

~Seasonal Linens
Of course, linen napkins add the most wonderful touch of elegance to any table, and Christmas plaid or red and green are no exception. My grandfather, who was a “Silversmith to the Stars”, loved a bare table with only plates (or placemats) but wasn’t a fan of covering a beautiful wood table. I have followed suit. Try leaving the wood table bare! The natural elements together is beautiful and simple.

“I tell you, the more I think, the more I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.” ~ Vincent Van Gogh

Backlash (Capital Intrigue) Book 2 by Rachel Dylan

Book Description:  CIA analyst Layla Karam is thrust into a dangerous DEA field operation against a cartel that puts a target on her back. Though Layla never wanted to be a field agent, Langley had other ideas. After one of her team members is murdered because of fallout from the op, Layla is left scrambling to find safety. At the same time, the CIA opens up an internal investigation against her. Out of options, Layla turns to ex-boyfriend and private investigator Hunter McCoy for help finding out who might want to ruin her career.Layla and Hunter soon discover a mole inside the DEA has sold out the team's identity to the cartel. She must clear her name with the Agency and protect herself and her teammates from cartel retaliation. With threats on all sides, Layla must put her trust in Hunter--the man who broke her heart--and hope they both come out of it alive.

My Thoughts:  This is the second book in the Capital Intrigue series.  And, boy oh boy! what a read!
This story is classified as romantic suspense but it is SO much more than that.  It's a read about CIA analyst Layla, the DEA, a cartel, Layla's team members and Hunter McCoy.
It just so happens that Layla has made an enemy of a certain cartel.  And this is not a "good" cartel.  The people in this cartel want Layla gone...you know, as in dead gone.
Poor Layla!  She has unknowingly stepped into a snares trap.  Fortunately for he she realizes what is happening and calls on her team members to help her but it may too late.
And then her ex-boyfriend, Hunter, shows up to help.  Layla uint quite sure how he can help.  It seems that things are not as they seem.
This is a WOW! read with those nail biting and can't turn the pages fast enough moments.  All the criteria for a wonderful read of intrigue and suspense.

On My Honor (Heroines of WWII) by Patty Smith Hall

Book Description:  Ginny Mathis had no intention of staying rooted in the Outer Banks—then war broke out. While working as a clerk for Oregon Inlet ferry, naval officers ask her to be watchful for German U-boats reportedly spotted in the area. To help occupy her younger sister, Ginny enlists the Girl Scout troop she leads to help watch for suspicious activity. Soon the girls are sneaking around, hiding a shipwreck survivor. Ginny must take charge, but is this man the enemy, or does he hold secrets that could turn the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic in the allies’ favor?

My Thoughts:  I love stories about World War II and this is an interesting story from a different angle.
Ginny wants to be part of the war effort and doesn't want to be one of those people who just stays planted in one spot.  She wants to be part of the action.  She wants to help.
When the naval officers ask Ginny to watchful for German U-boats.  She decides to enlists the girls scout troop and to occupy her younger sister at the same time.
Ginny and the girls take their "job" quite seriously and soon there is suspicious activity with a U-boat. Sure enough a man emerges.
Ginny and the girls are excited but Ginny wants to err on the side of caution.
Who can be trusted in these perilous times?  No one!
Instead of approaching the man the girls watch him and watch him. Soon he notices the girls.
This is an excellent story and will back a great gift.

My Thoughts:  I love Bibles that allow one to either write her own thoughts or to draw something as a reminder of the verse(s) she has read.
This Bible is BEAUTIFUL on the outside.  AN absolutely beautiful cover---kind of a hard back cloth.
The inside was a bit of a disappoint to me.  For some, unknown, reason, I had a thought that there would be bigger spaces and places to write or draw and I thought there would be preprinted drawings throughout the Bible to color.  But,alas, I was incorrect.
Oh, well.  It is still a wonderful Bible.

The Escape by Revell Reads by Lisa Harris

Book Description:  US Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn are thrust into a high-profile case when they are called on to transport two prisoners across the country on a private plane. But when the plane experiences engine trouble en route from the Pacific Northwest to Colorado, the pilots crash-land the aircraft deep in the heart of the sprawling Salmon-Challis National Forest.

When Madison and Jonas regain consciousness, they find both pilots and one prisoner dead--and one fugitive on the run. They'll have to negotiate the rugged and remote backcountry through Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado while tracking a murderer who is desperate to disappear--and will do anything to stop them.

My Thoughts:  The action, the suspense, the characters....oolalala!  What a read!

This is one of those gotta reads if you love action and suspense.  Of course, Lisa Harris never disappoints with adding a bit about having faith.

It seems simple enough for US marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn to transport two prisoners on a private plane.  Not much can happen while one is in the air.  Or can it?!?!

First, the plane has engine trouble, the pilot has to make a crash landing in a forest, one prisoner dies and the pilot dies in the crash.  then when Madison and Jonas regain consciousness they realize the other prisoner has escaped.  how did a simple trip become so very complicated?  And that's just the beginning of the story!

It's interesting to find out how US marshals rally work and the way they put themselves in danger for the sake of the the good.

Oh.my!  I loved this read!  Fantastic writing with enough action, suspense and little romance to make me wish I could become an US marshal.

Smitten by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, & Denise Hunter

Meanwhile, the faith of a little child reminds the whole town what it means to have real faith in the God who is the always and forever Love. My Review: The lumber town of Smitten has been smitten with a case of bad luck; no lumber mill, no town? But four friends decide the town is worth saving and come up with a plan! A honeymoon destination for those who are smitten by the love bug. "Natalie" by Colleen Coble is all about Natalie and Joe Smitten, the town leader. Natalie finds that the heart of a person goes deeper than their words. "Julia" by Kristin Billerbeck how Julia must come to grips with Jake without letting him burn up all her plans. "Shelby" by Diann Hunt is about Shelby and mountain man, Nick. Shelby loves tea and Nick loves trees, ummm...quite a mix! "Reese" by Denise Hunter finds Reese smitten by her long time friend, Griffen. Reese's plan to get Griffen's attention is humorous and quite original. This is a fun, light read! A great book for sitting by the fire with a cup of hot tea or cocoa.
