An August Bride (A Year of Weddings Novella Book 9) Debra Clopton

Book Description:  Kelsey vowed never to love a cowboy again. But then she meets Brent.

After a cowboy broke her heart, Kelsey Wilcox traded in her boots for flip-flops and a bistro on the beautiful sandy beach of Corpus Christi. Two years later, still not believing in happy endings, she is about to endure a weekend of torture at her cousin's beach wedding. Not only will she be forced to watch yet another wedding, but her great-aunt and her two best friends-aptly nicknamed "the matchmaking posse of Mule Hollow"-are coming to the wedding, and Kelsey is sure to be on their radar.
Brent Corbin has had his share of bad luck with women and isn't looking for love or looking forward to the weekend of wedding festivities as a groomsman for his friend. When he sees a commotion on the beach and what appears to be a mermaid in distress, he doesn't hesitate to dive to the rescue. His attention is instantly captured by the woman he's saved and it turns out they're part of the same wedding party. But the instant Kelsey spots his soaking wet boots she wants no part of him.
Thrown together through the weekend and with the meddlesome encouragement from the matchmakers, Brent is determined to pursue Kelsey and change her mind about cowboys. Sparks fly at this August wedding as Kelsey and Brent dance a rocky Texas two-step toward a beach wedding of their own.
My Thoughts:
I've read almost all of the "monthly bride" books.  But this one may be my all.time.favorite!  I love, love the way Debra Clopton writes.                       Once again she writes about a cowboy and a lady.  This time Kelsey has determined not to ever, ever like a cowboy again!  Cowboys are just so non committed!  But on the other hand Brent has had bad luck with the ladies.  Then he and Kelsey are thrown together at a wedding of friends.                                                                     Gotta love those match makers!                                                                                                                                This story is humorous and well, it's just so naturally funny.  I could actually "see" these incidents happening in real life.                                                                         Sometimes you just have to do the Texas two step and get on with life! {smile}    This is a fun light read!

Thief of Glory: A Novel by Sigmund Brouwer

Book Description:  A boy coming of age in a time of war…
the love that inspires him to survive.
For ten year-old Jeremiah Prins, the life of privilege as the son of a school headmaster in the Dutch East Indies comes crashing to a halt in 1942 after the Japanese Imperialist invasion of the Southeast Pacific. Jeremiah takes on the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings when his father and older stepbrothers are separated from the rest of the family, and he is surprised by what life in the camp reveals about a woman he barely knows—his frail, troubled mother.
Amidst starvation, brutality, sacrifice and generosity, Jeremiah draws on all of his courage and cunning to fill in the gap for his mother. Life in the camps is made more tolerable as Jeremiah’s boyhood infatuation with his close friend Laura deepens into a friendship from which they both draw strength.
When the darkest sides of humanity threaten to overwhelm Jeremiah and Laura, they reach for God’s light and grace, shining through his people. Time and war will test their fortitude and the only thing that will bring them safely to the other side is the most enduring bond of all.

My Thoughts:  This is the first book that I've read by Sigmund Brouwer...what a read!  To be honest the title caught my attention...Thief of Glory...Who steals glory and can glory be stolen?  What is glory?
Another war story...tissue alert!
It seems that ten year-old Jeremiah is quite a responsible young man.  This is his story of survival and faith!  Jeremiah sees more than the present he sees beyond the dust and dirt the strife and anger.
Jeremiah's mother seems to be rather self centered and non responsive...can't deal with life.  Jeremiah also becomes the parent and it seems that his mother becomes the child. But there are surprises along this journey of life.
Jeremiah makes a friendship with a girl he knows, Laura.  He and Laura become close friends when their families are placed in camps.  Friendships help people survive!
It seems that starvation, brutality, death and unkindness can actually make some people stronger and able to survive.  Such seems to be the case of Jeremiah and Laura.
Quite a read!

Saving Amelie by Cathy Gohke

Book Description:  Increasingly wary of her father’s genetic research, Rachel Kramer has determined that this trip with him to Germany—in the summer of 1939—will be her last. But a cryptic letter from her estranged friend, begging Rachel for help, changes everything. Married to SS officer Gerhardt Schlick, Kristine sees the dark tides turning and fears her husband views their daughter, Amelie, deaf since birth, as a blight on his Aryan bloodline.

Once courted by Schlick, Rachel knows he’s as dangerous as the swastikas that hang like ebony spiders from every government building in Berlin. She fears her father’s files may hold answers about Hitler’s plans for others, like Amelie, whom the regime deems “unworthy of life.” She risks searching his classified documents only to uncover shocking secrets about her own history and a family she’s never known.

Now hunted by the SS, Rachel turns to Jason Young—a driven, disarming American journalist and unlikely ally—who connects her to the resistance and to controversial theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Forced into hiding, Rachel’s every ideal is challenged as she and Jason walk a knife’s edge, risking their lives—and asking others to do the same—for those they barely know but come to love.

My Thoughts:  I love summer and, again, this summer I entered the Tyndale Summer Reading Program.  So glad I did!  As one of my "prizes" I picked this book Saving Amelie by Cathy Gohke.
When I first saw the cover of this book I actually passed it up. Then I went back and read the description and thought it sounded interesting.
When the book arrived it sat on my TBR for a couple of months and then the other day, since I was finished with my last book, I decided to read it.
Well, this is one great read!  As I began reading I first thought the book was going to be about a rich young woman and how she saves a young deaf girl from the Third Reich.  Oh!not!so!  Well, this does come into play but there  is SO much more to this story.
I had to put the book down several time because it IS so intense!
This book is about life . . .what is our duty to others AND Dietrich Bonhoeffer!  Wow!
The suspense, the story line, the challenge of one's duty to Christ!  Cathy Gohke pens an incredible, not.to.be put.down story!
This is my favorite read this summer!
You just gotta read this book . . . it will make you think!

COTT {Clash of the Titles} O'Barr's Latest: Tender Shadows

Author Ann Gaylia O'Barr visits today!
She brings with her, in the form of her latest novel, all her experience as a Foreign Service officer in the turbulent Middle East. Tender Shadows is one of seven such novels and will appeal to lovers of foreign lands, culture, adventure, and romance.

PURCHASE

About Tender Shadows:

When Beth Wilhite’s U.S. State Department job assigns her to an uncaring Washington, D.C. following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, her intense loneliness leads her to make decisions that clash with her values. Then she receives a new assignment to the Middle Eastern kingdom of Al Hajar and a chance to serve with an old friend, Joe Harlan, widowed a few years before. Can she overcome the grip of past choices? Not yield to them again? Can Joe accept what she’s done…and move beyond, perhaps even to loving her?

Joe’s daughter, Annie, working under Beth at the U.S. embassy, deals with her own secret choice. And the young diplomat, Palestinian-American David Antony, struggles with traumatic stress because of a choice he made earlier in Iraq. Yet Annie and David are inexplicably drawn toward each other.

Together, might this thrown-together community find courage to live out his or her individual calling…for such a time as this? And find a forever love?

Meet Ann Gaylia O'Barr:

Ann has at one time or another been a full-time wife and mother, computer programmer, historic preservation planner, Foreign Service officer with the U.S. State Department, and, since 2004, full-time writer (more or less).  OakTara has published six of her novels. The latest is Tender Shadows, which came out this spring. Her last article was “The Diversity of God’s Call to Writers” in the winter 2012 issue of ACFW Journal.
Ann, many of the major characters in your novels are American Christians who serve their country at United States embassies overseas, as you did. What kinds of tasks did you and your colleagues perform overseas?

The work is tremendously varied. The web site www.state.gov gives some idea of what Foreign Service officers do. My job as a consular officer included aiding American citizens overseas. Some tasks were routine: renewing U.S. passports and performing notary services. Others were anything but routine, such as notifying families in the United States that a loved one had died overseas or visiting Americans who were jailed in the foreign country and reporting on their conditions--to the families and to the State Department.

How did your experiences influence your writing?

Observing the United States from other cultures, I developed an interest in why and how this country and its culture became what they are in the twenty-first century. The changes in our country from 1990, when I came into the Foreign Service, until 2004, when I left, have been tremendous. I was assigned to Saudi Arabia during both Gulf Wars (1991 and 2003) as well as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As we all know, the changes haven’t stopped since then.

Two observations stand out: 1) How decadent some foreigners judged our culture, based on the sometimes hedonistic lifestyles illustrated in the media. 2) For America to be the world power that it is, many Americans, including American Christians, often appeared not interested in what goes on in the world outside our borders.

A lot of my stories concern Christians working to explain the country they represent to foreigners. Beset with the same temptations and challenges that Americans experience domestically, they attempt to live out their Christian commitment in their foreign settings. The settings may reflect these temptations and challenges through a different lens.

Is this especially true for Tender Shadows?

I think so. A couple of the characters have strayed further from their commitments than in any of my other novels and struggle to find their way back. The small embassy community they inhabit means they work out their problems in closer quarters than in most domestic settings. Plus, foreign demonstrations at the embassy, along with concern over hostility toward Americans, heighten the tension and outline the challenges in a deeper hue.

Christmas at Holly Hill (Winds Across the Prairie) by Martha Rogers

Book Description:  Can Clayton Barlow prove he has changed his ways in time for Christmas?
It is October 1898, and Clayton Barlow has just returned home after serving time in prison for his part in a bank robbery. His family welcomes him, but the townspeople are skeptical. Bored with life in the small town but determined to make a new start, he goes to work with his father, hoping to regain the town’s trust.
Clayton recognizes the schoolteacher at the Prairie Grove School as his childhood friend, Merry Lee Warner, and old feelings surface. Still, he doubts that he could ever get a woman like Merry to love him.
As the townspeople prepare for Christmas, their suspicions about Clayton lead to trouble. Will the trusting heart of an unlikely new friend be enough to restore Clayton’s relationships with his neighbors and reunite him with God and Merry?

My Thoughts:  It's that time of year again...time for the Christmas books to begin making their appearance!  And I love it!  Simply because when the Christmas season rolls around I have a hard time finding time to read so now I can enjoy the season before it gets too busy!
Christmas at Holly Hill is the heartwarming story of Clay and Merry.  Clay has been in prison for five looong years!  And comes home to find that his childhood friend Merry is the school teacher.  But as much as Clay admires Merry and would love to get closer to her (they were sweethearts when they were sixteen) he feels that a proper school teacher should never associate with the likes of him, after all he is an ex-con!
Even through all of his misgivings Clay's parents welcome him home with open arms.  And when Mary sees him at his father's store she runs to him and envelopes him in a bear hug.  But Clay doesn't want to ruin Merry chances with the school board so he tries to stay away from her.  But does it work?
Many of the townspeople's, including many of the church people, have already "judged" Clay because of his "mistake."
An interesting and greatly written story of love and forgiveness.  One of Martha Rogers' best stories!
A wonderful Christmas story (for any time of the year!).

COTT {Clash of the Titles} "A Place in His Heart," a New World Romance!

Today's featured novel,

A PLACE IN HIS HEART
is a historical romance authored by Rebecca DeMarino.
It's her debut novel and book one of
The Southold Chronicles.
"I hope my readers find pure entertainment! I hope they enjoy the love story, with all of the ups and downs of Mary and Barnabas. I hope they get lost in a time period that was so far different than ours, and yet so filled with the same emotions – heartache and joy, a sense of belonging and adventure. The takeaway I had in writing this story is that God is with us – He will hold our hand – in all of our journeys, if we ask Him!"
 --Author Rebecca DeMarino

About the book:
Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Left at the altar and disgraced in her small hamlet, she is being pressured to marry the eligible son of the London milliner. Puritan Barnabas Horton, the town baker, still grieves the loss of his beloved wife, but he knows his two young sons need a mother.

With tender hearts, Mary and Barnabas take a leap of faith and wed. But when Barnabas’s secret plans to move his family to the New World to escape persecution come to light, Mary’s world is upended. How could she possibly leave her Papa and her dear sister? And will she ever reach the secret places of her husband’s broken heart?

About the author:
Rebecca DeMarino lives in the Pacific Northwest, and inherited her love of baking and gardening from her mother, a love of horses, reading and writing from her dad, and a wanderlust gene from both parents. No one knows where she got her passion for jogging and hiking! A Place in His Heart, is a historical romance inspired by her ninth great-grandparents, Barnabas and Mary Horton, and is book one of The Southold Chronicles.
How the book came about:
"I grew up listening to my mom’s stories about Barnabas Horton, my ninth great-grandfather and how he
came across the pond from England on a ship called The Swallow, in the 1600’s. When my brother became interested in genealogy, we discovered there was a lighthouse named after Barnabas, located on Long Island. I asked my mom if she’d like to go there, and off we went.

"There was a lot of interesting information about Barnabas. He was a baker and a very recent widower with two young sons when he met my ninth great-grandmother, Mary, in Mowsley, England. But I could find very little about her, and I began to wonder about what dreams and motivations she had, and the courage she must have possessed, when she married and then left her family behind for the wilds of Long Island.

"A few years later, I began writing my first novel in hope that I could give her and the other courageous women who followed their men across the pond a voice." --Rebecca DeMarino

With Every Breath by Elizabeth Camden

Book Description:  In the shadow of the nation's capital, Kate Livingston's respectable life as a government worker is disrupted by an encounter with the insufferable Trevor McDonough, the one man she'd hoped never to see again. A Harvard-trained physician, Trevor never showed the tiniest flicker of interest in Kate, and business is the only reason he has sought her out now.
Despite her misgivings, Kate agrees to Trevor's risky proposal to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. As Kate begins to unlock the mysteries of Trevor's past, his hidden depths fascinate her. However, a shadowy enemy lies in wait and Trevor's closely guarded secrets are darker than she ever suspected.
As revelations from the past threaten to destroy their careers, their dreams, and even their lives, Trevor and Kate find themselves in a painfully impossible situation. With everything to lose, they must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail over all.

My Thoughts:  I love Christian fiction!  With Every Breath is one of those books that takes the reader into another time and another place.
Ms. Camden takes us to the world without modern medical devices. . .into the world of tuberculosis.  Without a lot of medical jargon Ms. Camden describes the disease so that reader does not get lost "outside" the story but Trevor's plans to find a cure for tuberculosis is interesting.
The romance in this read is clean.  Trevor and Kate clearly like each other so this is a nice change from the "kissy, kissy junk" .  . . just good clean courting!
This is a great read!  If you've never read a book penned by Elizabeth Camden you may not realize that she always throws a twist in the story just when you think you've figured it all out!
Also, this book is filled with interesting history facts!
Quite a fascinating read!

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn by Lori Benton

Book Description:  In an act of brave defiance, Tamsen Littlejohn escapes the life her harsh stepfather has forced upon her. Forsaking security and an arranged marriage, she enlists frontiersman Jesse Bird to guide her to the Watauga settlement in western North Carolina. But shedding her old life doesn’t come without cost. As the two cross a vast mountain wilderness, Tamsen faces hardships that test the limits of her faith and endurance.

Convinced that Tamsen has been kidnapped, wealthy suitor Ambrose Kincaid follows after her, in company with her equally determined stepfather. With trouble in pursuit, Tamsen and Jesse find themselves thrust into the conflict of a divided community of Overmountain settlers. The State of Franklin has been declared, but many remain loyal to North Carolina. With one life left behind and chaos on the horizon, Tamsen struggles to adapt to a life for which she was never prepared. But could this challenging frontier life be what her soul has longed for, what God has been leading her toward? As pursuit draws ever nearer, will her faith see her through the greatest danger of all—loving a man who has risked everything for her?

My Thoughts:  A new author to me, Lori Benton writes about Tamsen Littlejohn.
I was afraid that this read might be a tad too slow for me...well, I judged a book by its cover...but even though it's not a who.done.it. mystery/suspense there is a quite a bit to keep the reader interested and turning the pages.
Tamsen is one of those admirable ladies who has a mind of her own and knows how to use it.  No simpering, whimpering debutante here!
Tamsen with a determination of a strong will arranges her journey to North Carolina.  But there is always a cost to change---good or bad.  And even though Tamsen's life change is for the better she struggles to adapt to her new life.
The irony of the story is that Tamsen's suitor (the one from whom she is running) believes without a doubt that she has been kidnapped.
The journey, the life, the love, the problems all make for a great faith filled read! and a great pre-revolutionary story...filled with history!
A well written novel!

My Happy Pumpkin God's Love Shining Through Me By Crystal Bowman

Book Description:  This book shares with young children the delight of picking out and carving your first pumpkin and compares this experience to God choosing us and shaping us to his delight. Just as the candle we put in a pumpkin glows, so does God's light shine in us.

My Thoughts:  I love fall season so when I saw this cute book I fell in love with the sweet little mouse and the happy colors.
I'm always on the lookout for books to place in our church nursery and this nice hardback book fit the bill.
This sweet story is short (nice for tiny attention spans) and the illustrations are sweet and colorful.  I actually wanted this book for the colors!  {smile}
My Happy Pumpkin is a cute story for little ones and as tiny hands hold the book it's okay if some cookie crumbs or juice dribbles on the book because an adult can easily wipe this book clean.
The story is simply shared as a likeness of people picking out a pumpkin and shaping it into a fine carving for fall.  Just as God picks us out and shapes us into His likeness with our light shining for all to see . . . just as a candle shines though the carved pumpkin.  {This is not a theological book just a sweet book for little ones}
This book would make a cute fall gift for that special little one!

{Tyndale Blog Tour} Evergreen: A Christiansen Winter Novella (Christiansen Family) by Susan May Warren

Book Description:  An empty nest has Ingrid Christiansen dreading the upcoming holidays, but her husband, John, couldn’t be more excited about this new season of life. He even has a surprise trip abroad planned. He’s sure she’ll love it. What’s more romantic than Christmas in Paris?
Before he can stop her, however, Ingrid agrees to spearhead a major church project. Then their faithful dog, Butterscotch, needs emergency surgery, draining their savings. And then—because disasters strike in threes—an unexpected guest arrives, dredging up old hurts.
As a beautiful blanket of snow transforms the north woods into a winter wonderland, a deep chill settles over John and Ingrid’s marriage. With the holidays fast approaching, their only hope of keeping their love evergreen depends on turning the page on the past and embracing a new chapter of their future.

My Thoughts:  Oh!Yes! Christmas in August! I love when the Christmas reads begin making their appearance! And it's another favorite author of mine, Susan May Warren.  I love the easy, interesting way she has with words.
This is a "different" kind of read...in that, it's a romance that involves a married couple.
Empty nesters, Ingrid and John, have different views about "the empty nest."  John is excited and has quite a few plans for them since they are "free."  But Ingrid misses the happiness of the holidays with their kids.
As life would have it, Ingrid gets caught up in a major church project and then to top it all off their sweet family dog needs major surgery and depletes their savings.  But that's not all folks!  An unexpected stranger shows up with the snow. . . .old hurts, old wounds seem to come up like a blizzard after a sunny day.
John and Ingrid have a choice to live as an evergreen tree...an evergreen tree stays green and has all of it's leaves in all four seasons.  This book has an unusual title, Evergreen, but the title makes the reader think of all the seasons of our lives and how we can live our fullest by forgiving and giving to others.
A wonderful read!

{Handlebar Blog Tour} The Healing Quilt by Wanda Brunstetter

Book Description:  Join retired Amish newlyweds Emma and Lamar Miller in Florida for the winter as they lead another quilting class with a new group of unlikely students: Jennifer, a pregnant new mom; Mike, a charter boat owner; Erika, a wheelchair bound teen; Kim, a waitress; Noreen, a newly-retired widow, and BJ, an artist facing illness. When old friends visit from Indiana, will romance also become a subject of class discussions?

My Thoughts:  Oh!My! I was super excited (okay waaaay beyond excited) when this book, The Healing Quilt, came in the mail the other day.
I was just going to take a "tiny" peek at the first chapter after supper and before I knew it it was nine o'clock in the evening!
Having read The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club and The Tattered Quilt: The Return of the Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club I just knew that The Healing Quilt was going to be SOOOO good, too.  I was right!
Emma and Lamar are an Amish couple who are newly weds...they are in the fall of their lives and since they are retired they head to Florida for the winter.  It always makes me smile (not sure why) to think of Amish people going to Florida for vacations.  Maybe it's the thought of all the beaches and the Amish still wear black stockings and caps?
Again, Emma begins another quilting class with a miss mash of unlikely quilters.  And again, Emma and Lamar share their very solid faith with those who are hurting. . . my heart went out to Erika.
And of course, there is romance!
One does not need to read the previous two books to read The Healing Quilt, but you'll want to anyway!
This may be my favorite read yet!  Wanda Brunstetter does it again!
