Book Description: Robert Leon Davis was a street kid from a tough community. Raised on the brink of poverty, he and his siblings often went hungry, but with the help of a family in the neighborhood, he beat the odds and studied criminal law at Loyola University and joined the New Orleans police department in 1975.
He began his career with aspirations of being a great cop, but before long he was exposed to a darker side of law enforcement. While partnered with a veteran, Davis first witnessed an officer violating the very laws he had vowed to uphold--and he shared in his crime. One compromise led to another, and Davis soon was caught and faced a substantial prison term. Cops in prison don't last long. He fled.
Davis found himself a fugitive, living off the land in remote forests in the United States and Canada to elude capture. His church upbringing was abandoned in anger. For over twenty years he hid, becoming an expert survivalist. He might still be running, but through a stranger s prayer the angry atheist realized he was weary of hiding. Slowly he yielded his life to God and eventually gave himself in. But when the New Orleans DA dusted off his file, what would his sentence be?
Today, Robert Davis is a committed Christian and motivational speaker. He uses his extraordinary experiences to share his message of hope and redemption to both adults and children.
My Review: Running Scared is a story of sinful acts and the consequences that the innocent are subjected to when sin is overwhelming. Robert Davis was the eldest of nine children all living with their grandmother in New Orleans – on welfare. His grandmother was a good, honest woman and Davis loved and respected her, but money was so tight that he resorted to thieving to bring some extra food in for the family. He knew that she would be deeply upset about his stealing but hunger takes precedent.
Then everything goes wrong. Temptation and a corrupt fellow police officer come his way and he succumbs to get something he didn't even really want. After that it was a slippery slope and before too long the respected cop was under arrest and looking at spending decades in prison – at best. So, he runs. At first his girlfriend stayed with him, but eventually it became too much and she left and Davis took to living in the woods, far from human contact and relying on his survival skills. For more than twenty years he lived wild or inconspicuously in cities, making his living from a life of crime. There were more relationships and more children destined to be brought up without a father.
It was physically and mentally tough, but Davis remains vehemently atheist. God has no part in his life. They have no need of each other. That was until the day that he heard a stranger's prayer and realised that he was tired. He was tired of running and tired of the life he was leading – and needed to have God in his life. The fugitive who had no need of God put his fate in God's hands and returned to New Orleans, to the family he had not seen in more than twenty years and to face justice.
One of those interesting reads that will encourage you and bring a faith lift into your heart!
