{Kregel Blog Tour} How Huge the Night by Heather Munn & Lydia Munn

Book Description:  Fifteen-year-old Julien Losier just wants to fit in. But after his family moves to a small village in central France in hopes of outrunning the Nazis, he is suddenly faced with bigger challenges than the taunting of local teens.
Nina Krenkel left her country to obey her father's dying command: Take your brother and leave Austria. Burn your papers. Tell no one you are Jews. Alone and on the run, she arrives in Tanieux, France, dangerously ill and in despair.
Thrown together by the chaos of war, Julien begins to feel the terrible weight of the looming conflict and Nina fights to survive. As France falls to the Nazis, Julien struggles with doing what is right, even if it is not enough-and wonders whether or not he really can save Nina from almost certain death.
Based on the true story of the town of Le Chambon-the only French town honored by Israel for rescuing Jews from the Holocaust-How Huge the Night is a compelling, coming-of-age drama that will keep teens turning the pages as it teaches them about a fascinating period of history and inspires them to think more deeply about their everyday choices.

My Review:  I enjoy books that deal with WWII and especially books that tell a story of Jews who escaped Hitler and his death trap.
Not only was I enticed by the cover of this book but the title "grabbed" me.  How Huge the Night seems to aptly describe how most people must have felt during this terrible time in history ~ like the night would never end!
Julien was quite "real" to me....maybe because I remember being 15 and all the changes that came into my life at that age.  But mostly, I think, because he is "real."  His sentiments, his feelings about the war and his "misunderstandings" about his family are heart tuggers.
Of course, Julien isn't the only "likable or livable" character in this read ..... there's Nina (oh, Nina's story is quite stirring!) and then there's Benjamin!  And Gustav!  Oh, and I truly loved Julien's grandpa.  A sweet, kindhearted, true blue gentlemen. Well, I could go on and on....but I don't want to give away spoilers!
Julien's parents feel that they MUST move their family to the small village of Tanieux, France.  Julien's frustrations with attending a new, small school where he is the new kid and feels most  unwelcome until one of his classmates strikes up a conversations and learns that Julien isn't truly a "foreigner."  When his classmate, Roland, finds out that Julien's grandfather is a local and that Julien lives with him.  He gives Julien some great advice on how to fit in as a local and with his classmates.  After Julien learns "the ropes" his life begins to change.
Then one Sunday as Julien is sitting in church listening to the pastor's sermon the pastor booms, "Love your enemies!"  Julien finds himself listening and thinking....the pastor continues his thought provoking sermon on loving your enemies.  At the end the pastor states, "The weapons of love, Fearless love."  Julien feels that he wants to do something/will do something as a solider would with fearless love.
This is 5 star GREAT-Tastic story!  I simply loved this read even though it is classified as teen fiction I feel that adults will love this read too!
**Don't forget to read the very end of the book, Historical Note, by Heather Munn .
About the Authors:
Heather and Lydia Munn have done and outstanding job of capturing the emotions and history of this time period which they based on actual events!

Double Take by Melody Carlson

Book Description:  It's spring break of her senior year and Madison Van Buren is fed up. Stressed over Ivy League pressure, her parents' marital problems, and her boyfriend's neglect, Madison gets in her car and drives west. Meanwhile, eighteen-year-old Anna Bronner wants to escape the so-called simple life--which for her consists of caring for younger siblings, sewing, cooking, and gardening--and she's well aware that her future will simply be more of the same with a man she doesn't love. Suddenly, worlds collide when Madison and Anna meet in a small town, realize they look uncannily similar, and decide the grass is definitely greener on the other side.

My Review:  Double Take is one of the best Teen/Amish fictions reads!  Not only is it fresh and fun but Ms. Carlson brings out "true life" happenings and the reader feels the pain, the misery, and the glamour!
Madison is a rich teen with a great attitude!  I truly enjoyed Madison's take on life.  She knows the truth and when to speak the truth!  She, also, knows when to let go.
Anna is Amish.  Anna is more realistic than Madison but she truly wants to experience the "other side of the fence."  Madison has given her that chance.  Anna has given Madison the chance to experience Amish family life, child care, and the "fun" of living plain.
Anna's Aunt Rachel is a character that I really began to like.  At first I, too, thought she was lazy and needed to much care but as the story progresses I really liked Aunt Rachel!
This is one of those stories that just gets better.  This story seems like a "take off" of The Prince & The Pauper or The Country Mouse & The Town Mouse but whichever story doesn't matter~ if you love Amish fiction with a twist then grab this read!  It's Wonderful!

Departures: Two Rediscovered Stories of Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen by Robin Jones Gunn

Book Description:  Now Boarding at Gate 10

After her high school graduation, still aching from Todd’s departure, Christy joins her family on a trip to Wisconsin to visit relatives. While there, she reunites with Matthew, an old friend from junior high. When Matthew starts to show a romantic interest in Christy, she realizes this summer vacation could change everything she thought her future would be.

In the Event of a Water Landing
Fifteen-year-old Sierra Jensen can’t wait to spend her summer vacation with her friend Jana at a pristine lake in Montana. But when they arrive, it becomes clear that Jana’s only interest is acquiring a boyfriend. Sierra just wants to hang out with the guys as friends, but Jana turns every encounter into a possible romantic relationship. As their friendship begins to suffer, Sierra wonders if it’s possible to find a Forever Friend who will listen to you, laugh with you, and keep your confidences.

My Review:  I enjoy reading ANY book by Robin Jones Gunn whether it be an "adult book" or a YA read.  This is a YA read but I love Sierra Jensen and Christy Miller.  It 's like reading about friends that I grew up with.  So, you can imagine my joy in "getting" to read DEPARTURES.
Departures is two books in one (two short books), put together both stories make for a fun, fast and enjoyable reading experience.  I was able to read this book in one sitting, which is not unusual for me with Robin’s writing.  She writes in a way that simply pulls me into the story.  I was not disappointed!
You haven't met Sierra Jensen or Christy Miller yet?  Then this is a fine book to begin with!
This is the story before the story. The story before Christy and Todd, before Sierra and Paul.  The series is explained in these reads.  This read explains Christy and Sierra.  It gives us a glimpse of their lives that actually created the series and best of all it's a great read!
The two stories take place the summer before Christy and Sierra meet.
Two novellas, two friends, and One great read!

COTT: Clash Of The Titles....Saying Goodbye

Guest post by Amanda Flower
When you finish reading a novel, are you ever sad to see the protagonist go? Does it feel like you’re saying good-bye to a good friend? Those are signs of well-crafted main characters, like the ones in our excerpts this week.
There are many protagonists whom I’ve met in my life who have felt like old friends, and I miss them at the end of the book.
Here are eight of my favorite protagonists and their characteristics which I found most endearing as a young reader and still admire to this day:
1. To Kill a Mockingbird- Scout Finch’s imagination
2. Pride and Prejudice- Elizabeth Bennet’s wit
3. Mouse and the Motorcycle- Ralph S. Mouse’s sense of adventure
4. Charlotte’s Web- Wilbur’s loyalty
5. The Baby Sitter Club Series- Kristy Thomas’s organization skills
6. Jane Eyre- Jane Eyre’s conscience
7. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe- Lucy Penvensie’s bravery
8. Mandie Series- Madie Shaw’s crime solving skills

My question for you, who is your favorite protagonist?

THE AMBITION by Lee Strobel

Book Description:  A corrupt judge in a mob murder case. A disillusioned pastor, hungry for power. A cynical reporter, sniffing for a scandal. A gambling addict whose secret tape threatens the lives of everyone who hears it. New York Times bestselling author Lee Strobel weaves these edgy characters into an intricate thriller set in a gleaming, suburban megachurch, a big-city newspaper struggling for survival, and the shadowy corridors of political intrigue. The unexpected climax is as gripping as the contract killing that punctuates the opening scene.

My Review: Lee Strobel's first work of fiction, THE AMBITION, is a read not to be missed!
I love a great mystery/suspense read and this book begins with mystery/suspense from page one!
The beginning of this read begins with a bookie trying to escape from "someone."  He ends up dead!  Then there's Tom O'Sullivan-sleazy/corrupt lawyer, there's Gina-the girlfriend who is trying to.do.right, and Garry Strider-newspaper man mad at the church for "moving" his live-in girlfriend out AND the mob!
Of course, when you read about the mob a lot of wonderful Italian food is mentioned.  Mama Mia! The lasagna! The pizza! Yum!!
This is a read that will make you think!  I found the Mega church world remarkable if not a bit daunting.
The world of deceit, lies and treachery is a life of wrong doing and murder . . . but on the flip side when one trusts in the Lord healing, truth and repentance are life giving and life saving for the truth seeker.
This remarkable work of fiction is an easy read but do set time aside for this novel is 283 pages of pure suspense filled with twists and turns at every chapter!
On pages 285 & 286 I liked the Disclaimers that Mr. Strobel gave.  He made note that this is a work of fiction and not facts about any one church or any one mob member.
This is a gripping, compelling novel that brings out The Ambition of those who seek only for themselves!

{Litfuse Blog Tour} A Reluctant Queen by Joan Wolf

JW A Reluctant Queen Giveaway
Book Description:  An inspiring re-imagining of the tale of Esther, a young Jewish woman thrust from a life of obscurity into a life of power, wealth, intrigue . . . and tender love.
See the story of Esther in an entirely new way-with all the political intrigue and tension you remember, but told as a passionate and tender love story between a young man and woman. Misunderstood by many, King Xerxes was a powerful but lonely man. Esther's beauty caught the eye of the young king, but it was her spirit that captured his heart.
Imagine anew the story of Esther, one of our faith's great heroines, destined to play a key role in the history of Christianity.

My Review:  Joan Wolf has written a fictional work of art about the life of Esther.  The story begins with Esther and Mordecai talking together over breakfast.  Mordecai tells Esther of the party he had attended the prior evening at the King's palace.  It all sounds very interesting to Esther because "unfortunately, the Jewish girls who made up Esther's circle would probably never have an opportunity to see this paragon for themselves...."
Mordecai seems more like a father to Esther than her uncle.  He cares for her, takes care of her and wants her to succeed in life.
And then when trouble arises in the court of the king Mordecai calls for a meeting in the community the elders all agree that someone must be sent to be an emissary to the king for the Jews.  They all decided that Esther must be the one since her father was an Achaemenid and her mother was a Jew.  The Persians count the lineage through the father's lineage, Mordecai tells Esther not through the mother's lineage as the Jews do.  Esther feels unworthy but Mordecai tells her that her beauty and her lineage are the two things that are most important for her to go into the King's court.
The story of Esther is wonderful! Joan Wolf writes a realistic and biblical account of this sad but encouraging time in Jewish history.
I like this sentence from the Author's Note page, to me it sums up the story of A Reluctant Queen, "the Cinderella Story of a little Jewish girl becoming the Queen of the Great King of Persia."
A wonderfully written, 5 star read for those who enjoy biblical fiction!
